The 90-Minute Bedtime Countdown

Run this sequence at the same time every night. The times below assume a 9:30–10PM bedtime with dinner a little earlier — shift everything to fit your household, and see the bedtime routine by age for younger puppies.

Time Step
About 3 hours before bed Last meal of the day. Gives your puppy time to digest before sleep.
60–90 minutes before bed Pick up the water bowl. Offer a potty break in the next 30 minutes.
60 minutes before bed Dim the lights and stop high-energy play. Switch to calm interaction — gentle petting, a chew, or a frozen lick mat.
10–30 minutes before bed Last potty run. Same spot, wait for a full empty, then straight to the crate. No play on the way back.

Bathroom Need vs. Attention

Probably a bathroom need Probably attention
Crying that escalates and doesn't stop Whining with regular pauses
Frantic pacing or circling Ears up, eyes on you
Pawing or scratching at the crate door Stops when you walk into the room
Intense sniffing near crate corners Playful pawing at the bars
Enough time has passed for their age Went potty recently

The full decision guide is in the 3AM crying framework.

The 3:00 AM Rule

If your puppy is under 14 weeks old and has been asleep for 4+ hours, assume it's a potty need first. Young puppies physically can't hold it through a full night. Take them out calmly, keep it boring, and go straight back to the crate. Rule out biology before you treat it as behavior.

Teething Window — Around 4 Months

Around 4 months, new teeth can cause sudden night wake-ups that feel like a regression. It's biology, not a training failure.

Frozen washcloth trick: wet a washcloth, twist it, and freeze it for 2+ hours. Offer it, supervised, during the wind-down before bed — the cold soothes sore gums. Take it away before crate time, since cloth can be shredded and swallowed. More in the teething and sleep guide.

Adolescent Shift — Around 6 Months

Around 6 months, behaviors you thought were solved — barking at bedtime, crate protests — can come back. Your puppy is testing whether the rules still apply.

Hold the line: don't drop the bedtime routine or loosen the rules now. Your puppy needs more consistency, not less. This phase passes. See the 4 and 6 month regression audit.

Overnight Expectations by Age

8–12 weeks 3–4 hours 1–2
3–4 months 4–5 hours 1
4–6 months 6–7 hours 0–1
6+ months 7–8 hours 0
